Scarlet / Violet rules & mechanics that change team building

Scarlet and Violet's defining mechanic is Terastallization.

  • Once per battle one Pokémon can Terastallize into its Tera Type, which replaces its defensive typing entirely — a Dragon can become a Fairy or Steel to dodge an attack. Turn on the Terastallized view in the Weaknesses tab to plan it.
  • Tera also boosts attacks of the Tera Type, and Tera into one of its own types makes that STAB 2× instead of 1.5×; Tera Blast changes type to match.
  • No Mega Evolution, Z-Moves or Dynamax.
  • Snow replaces hail: it no longer deals damage, but Ice types get 50% more Defense.
  • Paradox Pokémon (Great Tusk, Iron Valiant, Roaring Moon and others) get Protosynthesis or Quark Drive boosts in sun or Electric Terrain.
  • The Pokédex is Paldea plus The Teal Mask (Kitakami) and The Indigo Disk (Blueberry) — not every Pokémon can be transferred in.

Usage data on this page comes from Gen 9 OU singles; VGC doubles values differ.

3 example teams for Scarlet / Violet

Each team starts from a strong non-legendary that is among the most used in this format and is completed by DexTeam's own Smart picks, which add the Pokémon from Pokémon Scarlet & Violet that best cover the team's shared weaknesses. They are starting points, not finished sets — open one in the builder to add moves and items.

What this Scarlet / Violet team builder does

  • 849 Pokémon available in SV + DLC
  • Tera Type per Pokémon, with a Terastallized weakness view
  • Meta threats and popular sets from Gen 9 OU usage
  • Move lists filtered to SV learnsets

How to build a balanced team in 60 seconds

  1. Pick your game above so only legal Pokémon, moves and the right type chart are used.
  2. Add your must-have Pokémon. Tap a slot, type a few letters (English, 中文, 日本語, Français, Deutsch, Español or 한국어 all work) and press Enter.
  3. Read the red rows in the Weaknesses tab — a type is a problem when three or more Pokémon are weak to it and nothing resists it.
  4. Use Smart picks. The suggestions under your team are ranked by how much they reduce shared weaknesses and fill coverage gaps, weighted by how often they are used in real battles.
  5. Check Coverage and Threats, add moves (or one-click Popular sets), then Share the link or export to Showdown.

FAQ

Can I plan a Scarlet and Violet playthrough team using only Pokémon available in the game?

Yes. This page only offers the 849 Pokémon in Scarlet & Violet's Paldea, Kitakami and Blueberry Pokédexes (base game plus both DLC parts), with SV learnsets. It does not hide DLC Pokémon or ones that need trades or version exclusives, so check where to catch each one for a story run.

Does the team builder handle Tera Types?

Yes. Set a Tera Type on any Pokémon and switch on the Terastallized view in the Weaknesses tab — the chart then uses the Tera Type instead of the original typing, so you can plan defensive Teras.

How does the team builder calculate weaknesses?

For each of the 18 attacking types it multiplies the type-chart values against every Pokémon's typing, then applies abilities that change incoming damage — Levitate, Flash Fire, Water Absorb, Volt Absorb, Storm Drain, Sap Sipper, Thick Fat, Heatproof, Purifying Salt, Filter and more. A type is flagged red when three or more of your Pokémon are weak to it and at most one resists it.

Can I import and export Pokémon Showdown teams?

Yes. Paste any Showdown or PokéPaste text into Import and the builder keeps nicknames, items, abilities, Tera Types, EVs, IVs, natures, levels and moves. Export gives you text you can paste straight back into Showdown's Teambuilder.

How do I share my team?

Press Share to copy a link — the whole team is encoded in the URL, so anyone who opens it sees the same six Pokémon, sets and analysis. Image creates a 1200×675 team card that is ready for Reddit, Discord or X.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is completely free and has no sign-up. Teams are saved in your browser for each game and in the share link; nothing is uploaded.
