Free Pokémon Team Builder & Type Coverage Checker

In short: DexTeam is a free Pokémon team builder and weakness checker that runs in your browser — no sign-up, no download. Pick six Pokémon from any of 14 games (including Champions, Legends: Z-A and Scarlet/Violet) and it shows shared weaknesses with abilities counted, type coverage from your actual moves, meta threats and speed tiers, then suggests which Pokémon to add to fix the gaps.

What to look for in a free Pokémon team builder — and how this one does it

  • Free, no sign-up, no download. Everything runs in your browser. Teams are saved on your device and inside the share link — there is no account and nothing to install.
  • Only Pokémon from your game. 14 games and generations, each with its own Pokédex, learnsets and type chart (Gen 1, Gen 2–5 or modern), so a playthrough team only uses Pokémon that exist in that game.
  • Shared weaknesses, resistances and immunities. All 18 attacking types against all six Pokémon, with abilities such as Levitate, Flash Fire, Water Absorb and Thick Fat applied. Problem types are flagged red.
  • Type coverage from the moves you pick. Offensive coverage uses your damaging moves, falling back to STAB types until you add moves, and lists the types nothing on your team hits super-effectively.
  • Tells you which Pokémon to add. The "Best picks to fill your team" panel ranks candidates by how much they reduce your shared weaknesses and fill coverage gaps; Auto-fill completes the empty slots, and a full team gets swap suggestions.
  • Meta threats, popular sets and speed tiers. For Champions VGC, Scarlet/Violet OU and National Dex, threats and one-click sets come from public Pokémon Showdown usage stats (September 2026, refreshed monthly).
  • Pokémon Showdown import and export. Paste a Showdown or PokéPaste team to analyze it, then export it back to test in battle.
  • Share without an account. Copy a link that rebuilds the exact team, or save a 1200×675 image card for Reddit or Discord.

How to build a balanced team in 60 seconds

  1. Pick your game above so only legal Pokémon, moves and the right type chart are used.
  2. Add your must-have Pokémon. Tap a slot, type a few letters (English, 中文, 日本語, Français, Deutsch, Español or 한국어 all work) and press Enter.
  3. Read the red rows in the Weaknesses tab — a type is a problem when three or more Pokémon are weak to it and nothing resists it.
  4. Use Smart picks. The suggestions under your team are ranked by how much they reduce shared weaknesses and fill coverage gaps, weighted by how often they are used in real battles.
  5. Check Coverage and Threats, add moves (or one-click Popular sets), then Share the link or export to Showdown.

DexTeam vs Pokémon Showdown, Pikalytics and Marriland

These tools are complementary rather than rivals — many players use two of them. A common flow is: plan the team and fix its weaknesses here, check usage trends on Pikalytics, then export to Showdown and battle.

ToolBest forNotes
Pokémon Showdown teambuilderFinishing sets and actually battlingFull sets, format validation and a battle simulator. It shows little team-wide weakness analysis, so analyze here and export to Showdown to test.
PikalyticsUsage trends for VGC and Smogon formatsUsage rates, common moves, items and teammates, plus its own team builder. DexTeam uses public Showdown usage stats for threats and sets but is not a statistics site.
Marriland Team BuilderA long-established weakness chartClear weakness and resistance chart across generations. DexTeam puts weaknesses, move coverage, meta threats and suggested Pokémon in one view.

FAQ

What is the best free Pokémon team builder for competitive teams?

It depends on the job. Pokémon Showdown's teambuilder is where you finish sets and actually battle; Pikalytics is best for usage trends; Marriland has a long-standing weakness chart. DexTeam is a free option for the step before testing: it shows what your team is weak to, what it can't hit and which meta threats beat it, suggests Pokémon that fix the gaps, and exports the result to Showdown.

Is there a Pokémon team builder that checks type weaknesses and move coverage?

Yes. The Weaknesses tab checks all 18 types against your six Pokémon with abilities applied (a type turns red when three or more are weak and at most one resists), and the Coverage tab uses the damaging moves you picked — or STAB types until you add moves — to show which types you can and can't hit super-effectively.

What Pokémon should I add to cover my team's weaknesses?

Add the Pokémon you want to keep. The "Best picks to fill your team" panel under your team ranks candidates by how much each one reduces your shared weaknesses and fills coverage gaps (weighted by real usage where data exists); tap one to add it, or press Auto-fill to fill every empty slot. With six Pokémon it switches to "Swaps that fix your weak spots".

Can I build a Pokémon team without downloading anything or making an account?

Yes. DexTeam is a website that runs entirely in your browser — no app, no sign-up. Your team is saved locally per game, and Share puts the whole team in a link you can open on any device.

Can I plan a playthrough team using only Pokémon available in my game?

Yes. Pick the game first (for example Scarlet & Violet, Legends: Z-A, Sword & Shield or a generation such as Gen 4) and the picker only offers Pokémon from that game's Pokédex, with that game's learnsets and type chart. Being in the Pokédex doesn't always mean catchable early in the story, so check where to find each one.

How does the team builder calculate weaknesses?

For each of the 18 attacking types it multiplies the type-chart values against every Pokémon's typing, then applies abilities that change incoming damage — Levitate, Flash Fire, Water Absorb, Volt Absorb, Storm Drain, Sap Sipper, Thick Fat, Heatproof, Purifying Salt, Filter and more. A type is flagged red when three or more of your Pokémon are weak to it and at most one resists it.

Can I import and export Pokémon Showdown teams?

Yes. Paste any Showdown or PokéPaste text into Import and the builder keeps nicknames, items, abilities, Tera Types, EVs, IVs, natures, levels and moves. Export gives you text you can paste straight back into Showdown's Teambuilder.

How do I share my team?

Press Share to copy a link — the whole team is encoded in the URL, so anyone who opens it sees the same six Pokémon, sets and analysis. Image creates a 1200×675 team card that is ready for Reddit, Discord or X.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is completely free and has no sign-up. Teams are saved in your browser for each game and in the share link; nothing is uploaded.
