How to use the catch rate calculator

  1. Pick the Pokémon (its catch rate fills in) and the game.
  2. Set the wild Pokémon's level and yours, its HP and status, and the turn.
  3. Tick night or cave, surfing or fishing and whether you caught one before — these switch on the Dusk, Dive and Repeat Ball bonuses.
  4. Read the chance per throw for every ball, the balls you need for a 90% catch and the chance within 5 or 10 balls.

Planning a Nuzlocke? The first encounter on each route is your only chance — check it here, then log it in the Nuzlocke tracker. To see what a caught Pokémon's stats will be, use the stat calculator.

FAQ

How is the catch chance calculated?

First the modified catch rate: a = (3 × MaxHP − 2 × CurrentHP) ÷ (3 × MaxHP) × CatchRate × Ball × Status. From Gen 5 the game works in 1/4096 steps and Gen 8–9 add a bonus for low-level Pokémon. If a reaches 255 the catch is certain; otherwise the ball makes shake checks, and the chance that all of them pass is about a ÷ 255 in Gen 3–4 and (a ÷ 255)^0.75 from Gen 5.

What is the best Poké Ball?

Throw a Quick Ball on turn 1 (5×). After that, a Timer Ball reaches 4× from turn 11, a Dusk Ball is 3× at night or in caves, a Net Ball 3.5× on Bug and Water types, a Nest Ball up to 4× on low-level Pokémon and a Repeat Ball 3.5× on species you've caught. The table sorts every ball by its chance right now.

Which status is best for catching?

Sleep and freeze multiply the catch rate by 2.5 (2 in Gen 3–4). Paralysis, poison and burn give 1.5×. Sleep is the best you can reliably inflict (Spore, Sleep Powder, Hypnosis) and doesn't chip HP.

Does lowering HP matter?

Yes, up to 3×: at full HP the HP factor is 1/3, at 1 HP it is almost 1. False Swipe and Hold Back leave the target at exactly 1 HP.

What is a critical capture?

From Gen 5, a throw can become a critical capture, which makes only one shake check. Its chance grows with the number of species caught in your Pokédex (none below 31, up to 2.5× with more than 600) and doubles with the Catching Charm. Enter your Pokédex count under More.

Why are legendaries so hard to catch?

Most legendary and mythical Pokémon have a catch rate of 3, the lowest in the game (common Pokémon are 190–255). In Scarlet and Violet an Ultra Ball at full HP has under 3% chance; at 1 HP, asleep, with a Timer Ball after turn 10 it rises to about 20%.

How do Catching Power and back strikes work in Scarlet and Violet?

Catching Power from sandwiches multiplies the catch rate by 1.1, 1.25 or 2 (levels 1–3), and starting a battle by hitting the Pokémon from behind doubles it again. Neither works on static encounters such as legendaries. A wild Pokémon more than 5 levels above what your badges let you command is 0.8× harder per missing badge.

What is the best way to throw balls turn by turn?

The calculator's turn plan picks the best ball for every turn: usually a Quick Ball first, then Ultra, Dusk or Net Balls, and a Timer Ball from about turn 7 (it passes 3× at turn 8 and reaches 4× at turn 11). It shows by which turn you have a 50%, 90% and 99% chance.

Does it cover Let's Go, Legends: Arceus and Legends: Z-A?

No. Those games use different catch systems (throwing, back strikes, weight and level formulas). The calculator covers the battle catch formula of the main games from Gen 3 to Scarlet and Violet.
